We invite you to “Radical Innovators” – a musical wine dinner at Bouley Test Kitchen, featuring the Merz Trio.
Merz Trio takes their name from the early 20th-century “Merz pictures” of German visual artist Kurt Schwitters. The trio draws inspiration from Schwitters’ unique style of found-object collage that emerged in response to the fragmented and devastated world of post-WWI Europe. In keeping with Schwitters’ aesthetic of creation from pieced-together fragments, Merz Trio’s projects promote dialogue between seemingly disparate musics, texts, and artifacts, weaving and juxtaposing the trio’s repertoire within differing artistic worlds of visual art, dance, theater, and culinary arts.
For “Radical Innovators,” Merz Trio will perform a program of innovative masterpieces of Haydn and Schumann, interspersed with excerpts from Austrian composer Johannes Maria Staud’s “Ten Miniatures” (2007). The program explores shared traits of playful humor, bold drama, and powerful emotion between the old and new works.
A member of the Bouley Culinary Team will then discuss the culinary arts and present guests with a multi-course meal inspired by art and music.
The evening will begin with a 30 minute reception featuring passed canapés. Guests will then enjoy Merz Trio’s concert and Chef David Bouley’s menu accompanied by a complementary wine program curated by Beverage Director Adrien Falcon.

Merz Trio – Brigid Coleridge, Lee Dionne, Julia Yang
Brigid Coleridge – Violin
Brigid Coleridge is an Australian violinist based currently in New York. Her recital projects, informed by her interests in music, literature and theatre, offer a critical and multidisciplinary engagement with the works she presents.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Brigid has performed in major international concert venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room. Her appearances as concerto soloist have included the works of Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Shostakovich. She is a frequent recitalist, most recently having completed a recital tour of Holland with her duo partner, pianist Lee Dionne and she has received repeated invitations to perform at Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival in Vermont USA. Brigid is a founding member of Merz Trio, a piano trio based in New York.
Brigid is a recipient of the Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarship from the University of Melbourne, a Dorcas McClean Travelling Scholarship and the Australian Music Foundation’s Guy Parsons Award. She gratefully acknowledges additional support from the Youth Music Foundation, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Ars Musica Foundation and supporters via the Australian Cultural Foundation.
Brigid is currently a doctoral candidate in music performance at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where she works with Daniel Phillips. She holds an Artist Diploma degree and a Masters Degree in Performance from the Royal College of Music, London. Brigid graduated from the University of Melbourne with degrees in English Literature, French Language and Violin Performance. Her previous important music mentors include Maciej Rakowski and Mark Mogilevski.
Lee Dionne – Piano
Pianist Lee Dionne holds passion, imagination, and play at the core of his art. His performances have been described as “impressive” (NYTimes) and “impeccable” (Fanfare Magazine), and his interpretations combine a freedom of elocution with a depth of understanding across a repertoire spanning six centuries. Lee cultivates a particular interest in creating performances that help audiences form personally relevant connections with music. Such experiences have ranged from performance-based talks at major universities to interactive performances in schools and community centers.
Lee’s recent performances have taken place at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Paul Hall at the Juilliard School, Joe’s Pub and St. Peter’s Church in NYC, Sprague Hall at Yale University, Stull Hall at Oberlin College, and at the Philharmonie and Conservatoire Nationale Supérieure in Paris. In March, 2015 Lee made his debut as a soloist at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Philharmonic in Bratislava. A dedicated chamber musician, Lee is a founding member of Merz Trio and performs frequently as a core member of Cantata Profana and with Ensemble Connect (formerly Ensemble ACJW, a joint program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, and the Weill Institute).
Lee has appeared performing concerti alongside the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, the Yale Symphony Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Virtuosi. As a chamber musician he has been invited to perform at Staunton Music Festival, Yellow Barn Music Festival, and Norfolk Summer Music. Lee’s performances have been broadcast live on NPR, Britain’s Classic FM, Holland’s Classic FM, and Portugal’s Antena 2. His recordings can be heard on the MSR Records and Naxos labels.
Lee has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including a DAAD fellowship for study abroad in Germany, a Presser Foundation music award, and third prize in the 2012 James Mottram International Piano Competition. While studying at Yale University, Lee was the recipient of prizes at both Yale School of Music and Yale College in recognition of his musical leadership and the quality of his theses in music analysis and comparative literature.
Lee is currently a candidate for the Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance from Yale School of Music and the Soloist Diploma in piano performance from the Musikhochschule in Hannover, Germany. Previously he received his M.M.A. and M.M. from Yale School of Music and his B.A. in literature from Yale College. Lee’s many wonderful teachers and mentors have included Boris Berman, Matti Raekallio, Wei-yi Yang, Patricia Zander, Wilma Machover, Michael Friedmann, Paul Berry, and Arthur Haas.
Julia Yang – Cello
Cellist Julia Yang is a multifaceted performer who hails from Tallahassee, Florida. From 2014–2016, she resided in Miami Beach, where she was a member of the New World Symphony and actively performed as a solo and chamber musician. In 2016, she appeared with the Zaffre String Quartet at Yellow Barn, Banff Chamber Residency, Port Townsend Chamber Music Workshop, and Four Seasons Winter Workshop. Abroad, she recorded in the UK as a member of the 2015 Aldeburgh Strings, and in 2016, the Krzyżowa-Music chamber music workshop broadcast her opening performance on Polish television.
Julia has won numerous competitions, including the 2014 New World Symphony Concerto Competition, where she subsequently performed with the orchestra for sold-out concerts during its innovative WALLCAST concert series.
Julia has performed as principal cellist under conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Susanna Mälkki, James Gaffigan, John Adams, James Conlon, Hugh Wolff, Leonard Slatkin, and Nicholas McGegan in distinguished concert halls that include Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Symphony Hall (Boston). As part of her fellowship with Ensemble Connect, Julia teaches at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn.
